Safe, Sound and Secure: Fire and Security Door Solutions for Educational Spaces

In schools where safety and security are of utmost importance, fire and security door solutions elevate spaces and maximize functionality to help keep students safe in the event of an emergency while also meeting building code requirements.

No matter the size or space type, we are proud to have collaborated with dozens of schools to help provide the safety and security they need with premium fire and security doors. In a recent project for Northwood Middle School in Highland Park, Illinois, Wight and Company and Gilbane looked to Modernfold Chicago and McKeon Door Company to help provide safe and secure solutions for their unique spaces.

Fire and Smoke Protection

Life safety is a major concern for every school and choosing the right system depends on the project and life safety codes required for the building. In this project, the kitchen needed to be separated from a commons area, the school also needed a fail-safe system that provided fire and smoke protection but required little side-room. The McKeon Auto-Set® Model FSFD was the answer. This custom-built vertical coiling fire door is ideal for areas that need fire and smoke protection but not emergency egress. In the event of a power-failure or fire alarm, the Auto-Set Model FSFD can self-close without electricity or a battery back-up.

Security

In the uniquely shaped welcome area, the McKeon SC3000D-A system provided a secure option for an area with little overhead space available. The side acting security door does not require floor tracks and can navigate around a radius as small as 12 inches. The solid curtain slats provide complete enclosure when needed and is controlled by a positive action system that is housed within the coil box assembly.

Vertical-acting security doors are ideal for applications where side space isn’t available. The McKeon SD3000 vertical-acting security system was custom designed to accommodate the opening of Northwood’s Husky Den Café. The highly durable system offers added security and is easy to reset and maintain.

There are several spaces within Northwood Middle School, ranging from large to small, that required a secure system with the option of emergency egress doors. The McKeon SD3002E is a vertical coiling system that provides ample security and high durability for areas where severe exposure is an issue in an emergency. The system is custom designed to accommodate any size opening, large or small.
