Ryan Watson here with Modernfold Chicago. Here’s our next project. We actually utilized both a Modernfold as well as a Skyfold on this design.

The architect is Perkins and Will. The general contractor is Skender. We’ve got a confidential client that has taken over some space at the BMO Tower at 320 South Canal here in downtown Chicago. With the Modernfold Acousti-Clear, that is acoustically rated at 51 STC. It’s a manually operated paired panel glass operable partition with a pivot panel closure for egress. We’ve got automatic top and bottom seals. The system is manually operated. Just standard clear glass. We have a perimeter frame RAL finish. We’ve utilized some overhead track. There is no floor track, no floor threshold. We just got operable bottom seals. The wall is sized at just under 26 feet long and just under 9 feet tall.

With the Skyfold, we’ve got a Skyfold Classic 60. It’s fully automated, vertically folding and  utilizes industry leading 60 STC. We’ve got a finish at the top and bottom rows of the Carnegie Xorel Sahara Matte. It’s a color 607. The two middle rows utilize a marking surface, so they also have some functionality. We’ve utilized white seals around the wall. We used a micro drive motor so we can maximize our ceiling soffit height at the Skyfold location. The wall size is just under 24 feet long and just under 9 feet tall.

Fun fact for the space is the existing steel, it’s a W18 by 55, was repurposed to support the Skyfold wall. So that helped out in a couple of ways in maximizing our ceiling height as well as saving on some cost. With the Skyfold itself, it was designed with the fabric finish, a layer of sheet steel, honeycomb core, another layer of sheet steel, some acoustic insulation about eight to nine inches in the dead air space and repeat construction on the opposite side. Dual end seals, dual head seals and dual floor seals round out the construction offering a significant acoustic control of the space.
