In this project walkthrough, Ryan Watson takes you behind the scenes of a confidential client’s installation at Chicago’s historic Old Post Office. The project features four Skyfold Zenith operable wall systems that transform a large multi-purpose space into flexible, sound-controlled environments. Hello all, Ryan Watson here with Modernfold Chicago. Today we’re going to talk about a confidential client located at the old post office in Chicago. The architect is Partners by Design. The general contractor is Skender Construction.

There’s a total of four walls. Each wall or each application is a two-wall, one-motor application. The wall systems are Skyfold Zenith, and they’re acoustically rated at 55 STC. So they’re going to stop a significant amount of sound between the spaces. It’s a rather large multi-purpose space. The finish of the systems is Skyfold standard Devaltex pattern Marin 1300 colorway great white 1143. White seals were also incorporated. The openings are sized at 23 foot long, 11 foot high, and 28 foot long by 11 foot high. These two openings are separated by a column and there are two that run parallel with each other. Both openings are three panels wide and six panels high.

A fun fact is that there’s an existing nine and a half foot wide duct that runs perpendicular to the Skyfold walls. The duct was not moving. Skyfold was able to span the nine and a half foot wide ducts with its hangar locations being on the outside ends of that duct location. Similarly, the overhead structural steel was stopped at each end of the duct. There was no coverage at the duct location itself. As I mentioned, we’re able to span that across and maximize ceiling and solvent height at the location and maintain the existing duct.
